FAQ
What are the residency requirements for the School of Nursing?
Please review the SON Admission Policy for information regarding residency requirements.
Is there an entrance exam required for your undergraduate programs?
No entrance exam is required for admission into the UMMC School of Nursing.
What are the GRE requirements?
There is no GRE requirement for the MSN program.
What are the GPA requirements?
A minimum cumulative GPA (undergraduate and graduate coursework) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or alternatively, a nursing GPA of at least 3.0
How many students are accepted?
The number of students accepted differs from application cycle to application cycle depending on the number of qualified applicants, the number of available faculty, the number of available clinical sites and preceptors, etc.
How many times a year do you admit students?
The online MSN program begins multiple times a year, depending on the specialty track chosen. All Nurse Practitioner tracks begin once annually; new students start in the Fall semester only. The Nurse Educator (NED) and Nursing and Health Care Administrator (NHCA) tracks begin all three semesters.
The online Post-Graduate program offers multiple entry points throughout the year, depending on the specialty track. Students may begin the NED, NHCA, and FPMHNP tracks in the summer semester; the NED, NHCA, FNP, and AGACNP tracks in the Fall semester; and the NHCA track in the Spring semester.
When is the deadline to apply?
What classes do I need to take before starting nursing school?
Students applying to the MSN program must hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Is there a part-time option available?
Yes, students arrange their plan of study with their faculty advisor. Both the MSN and Post-Graduate plans of study are available on a full-time or part-time basis.
Is it possible for a student to have a job while enrolled in the MSN program?
Yes, most of our MSN students work while they are enrolled in this program. Typically, they work full-time and enroll in school part-time or work part-time and enroll in school full-time.
What are the clinical requirements for this program?
All students registered in our APRN tracks are required to complete 630 hours of clinical in their respective tracks.
Preceptors (NPs) or Facilitators (MDs/Dos) can be utilized for clinical learning experiences. The SON can assist in securing preceptors and facilitators for clinical learning experiences, but students are allowed/encouraged to secure themselves. Preceptors or facilitators should be secured the semester before clinical begins. Preceptors must have two (2) years experience, and facilitators must have one (1) year of experience.
Does UMMC School of Nursing offer scholarships/financial aid?
Yes, both are available to qualified students who apply.
